Help is available—without judgment
If you or someone you care about is struggling with alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, cannabis, stimulants or other substances, support is available in Austin and Central Texas. Addiction is a treatable health condition. Recovery can involve medical treatment, counseling, medication, peer support, family, and—for those who want it—spiritual community.
Withdrawal symptoms that deserve medical attention
Symptoms vary by drug, amount and frequency of use, other medications and medical conditions. Possible symptoms include anxiety, sweating, tremor, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fast heart rate, insomnia, agitation and cravings. Alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause dangerous seizures or delirium; do not attempt a rapid unsupervised detox if you may be dependent. Opioid withdrawal can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration; urgent assessment may be needed, especially in pregnancy or with other illnesses. A clinician can discuss evidence-based treatment and appropriate level of care.

Faith, Christianity and recovery—respecting every belief
Some people find that Christianity, prayer, pastoral counseling, church communities and Christ-centered recovery groups help them rebuild connection, purpose and accountability. Celebrate Recovery is one faith-based peer-support option worth exploring through participating local churches. For others, secular mutual aid, clinical treatment, family support or a different faith tradition feels more appropriate. No religious belief or participation is required to seek treatment or to receive respectful care. Faith-based support is a complement to—not a replacement for—medically supervised withdrawal when indicated.
